Katie hails from the Blue Ridge Mountains of southwest Virginia. She holds a BA in African American Studies from Wesleyan University; a Postbaccalaureate Certificate in Geographic Information Systems from the L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs at Virginia Commonwealth University; and a Certificate in Nonprofit Management from the Partnership for Nonprofit Excellence, also at VCU. Prior to joining IRAAS, she worked with research teams at The Sentencing Project, The Leadership Conference, and Housing Opportunities Made Equal of VA, and with various public service and community organizing projects. Among her many research interests, Katie's current work on the afterlife of slavery in Richmond, Virginia, explores black geographies, alternative temporalities, and critical approaches to the archive. She hopes to continue this research at the doctoral level. Katie resides in West Harlem, where she spends as many warm afternoons as she can in a hammock at the park.
